#98…Heather Mosher

by admin ~ October 5th, 2008

Heather Mosher works out of NY and NJ and surrounding areas, but my favorite photos on her site and blog are the ones she makes in Tribeca in NYC. The textures and depth and tones in them are just richly luscious and make me want to do more urban photography in my own downtown area. You will love her work and find quite a bit of inspiration here. Enjoy!

    #97…Molly Hilton

    by admin ~ September 27th, 2008

Molly Hilton is yet another talented photographer based out of San Diego-and as an aside, I’m amazed at the talent there, I’ve featured a lot of San Diego photogs, perhaps the lovely weather gives you more time to practice? ;)

Anyway, the thing I love about Molly’s work on her site and blog is that she seems to somehow capture a child’s true essence, giving us a brief look into who they really are. Her work with children, especially her black and whites, are just stunning, and I’m going to do something I rarely do, and show you two of my favorites that really connected with me from her site:

I haven’t looked at Molly’s site or blog for a very long time, over a year, but I’m so excited to see the fairly recent launch of her new specialty: Molly Hilton Baby! Molly does fabulous work with babies, she really has a true gift. I’ve been long considering a separate site and pricing structure for newborns and Molly has done it and done it beautifully. Enjoy!

      Parents for Ethical Marketing…

      by admin ~ September 22nd, 2008

Since so many of us photograph children, and many of us are parents, I wanted to bring this wonderful group to the attention of my readers:

Parents for Ethical Marketing (PEM-click here for link)

Here is a snip from their website to explain their focus much better than I could:

      Why Parents for Ethical Marketing?

Consumer marketing is everywhere. On television. In magazines and newspapers. On the Internet and on school buses. On billboards and on bus shelters. On milk cartons and cereal boxes.

      In our public schools.

And it’s almost impossible to buy anything for a child without a “brand identity.” Barbie, for example, can be found on everything from band-aids to board games to backpacks.

As parents, we know there’s a problem. We argue with our kids about what to buy, what to wear, what to watch and what to play. We know what is best for our kids, yet sometimes we give in when we know we shouldn’t.

Of course, parents are ultimately responsible for raising healthy children. But corporate marketers would have us believe that combating their damaging commercial messages is exclusively our problem

Parents for Ethical Marketing thinks it’s about time that corporations take some of the responsibility.

Through parental awareness, public pressure, and legislative initiatives, Parents for Ethical Marketing encourages corporations to adopt responsible marketing standards and practices that sustain the health of children and families.

If this is a topic that is interesting and important to you, as it is to me, you can join PEM’s mailing list for updates and action information. Thanks for reading!

        #96…Angela Weedon

        by admin ~ September 21st, 2008

Angela Weedon is based out of Dallas, TX, where she works with her husband Matt alongside her-helping with the business side and “toddler wrangling” as she calls it. :) Her work is amazing, and from viewing her site and her blog, I get such a sense of talent, and a textbook view of what a well established & grounded upscale photography business should look like.

I will try to keep this mini-rant small, but seeing how well Angela & her team work together is so evident from her online presence–it makes it all the more clear to me that the thousands of new “shoot & burn” photographers cropping up are really hurting customers. You won’t get service and quality from them like you will from a class act like Weedon Photography. It makes me wish there were some kind of guidelines to calling yourself a photographer. A license or something… because clients are getting burned, and it is hurting the name of good photographers all over the country.

Ok, must put away the soapbox.

Angela’s images are stunning, from studio to outdoors, newborn to families; lovely b&w images, beautiful color-I can’t see anything she can’t do. Really enjoyed her work and site and blog. Hope you will to~

I know Angela from church but had not been to her website in quite some time. I no longer can see how to find it but she also takes amazing underwater photographs.

Ok - so what would your guidelines to being a photographer include? I have been trying to learn everything I can about being a photographer, and I DON’T want to be a “shoot & burn” photographer. I have had bad experiences with bad photographers myself. But I do want to become a good professional photographer - so what do you think are the most important qualities are? I mean besides excellent photography skills?

        #95…Kelley Ryden

        by admin ~ September 18th, 2008

I’ve found a new favorite inspiration for newborn photography! Kelley Ryden has absolutely enchanting images of newborns, great tones and clarity and posing. You can tell that this is truly Kelley’s niche. Her photographs of toddlers are awesome too…but the newborns… exquisite. Nothing more to say - just top notch. The new mom’s of Omaha, NE better get her while she is still so cheap, because she is extremely talented. Find her blog here and her site here. (make sure you don’t miss her splash page image of the newborn twins…one of my favorite twins images ever!)

        Enjoy!

        #94…Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir

        by admin ~ September 14th, 2008

Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir is an amazing photographer from Iceland. If you have spent any time at all on Flickr, you have probably seen and admired some of her work on flickr. Her blog is about as “no frills” as you can get- (I think it may be the default wordpress?) but her work really does speak for itself. I’d recommend a stroll around her main site first, and then read some of her blog to get a feel for the brain behind the eye behind the photos. Truly innovative and distinctive work, it will inspire you on many levels, as well as eat up a big chunk of your time. Consider yourself warned. :)

        Enjoy!

What I love about your blog: I love the large size of the images! I also love the way your subjects look through your lens: at ease, comfortable, and having a great time being photographed! What I hate about your blog: sorry, there’s nothing I hate about it!! Keep up the great work!

I like your site! The color combo of the blue and goldy yellow is really soothing and your images have that same feel. I like how clean your site is too. Funny, right before checking my rss feed for your blog I was checking out the template you have! Funny!

Your work is really beautiful. I particularly love the really relaxed portraits - especially the one with the jumping child caught in mid-air.

One small blog design comment - the way the baby’s dark hair is cropped off in the header is really distracting. I think it would work better if there were more balance between the two ends of the body (since there is white showing by the feet, but the top end of the end is cut off). The photo itself is gorgeous though.

Thanks for all the hard work that you do to let us know about all of these great blogs.

        #92…Scott Strazzante

        by admin ~ September 4th, 2008

Scott Strazzante is a photographer for the Chicago Tribune, and started a blog recently to showcase some of the photos that as he says “don’t have a home”. I’m extremely glad he did… and I”m sure my readers will be as well. I looked through nearly every photo that he has up, and each one offered me something, a memory, a little slice of poignancy, a glimpse into the olympics, a slice of his photographic expertise and more. I hope he continues to post regularly, I’ll be adding this one to my reader for sure. Enjoy~

        Off topic…ovarian cancer walk

        by admin ~ August 31st, 2008

I posted this on my photography blog today….wanted to share it here as well. thanks

        Mary

Most people who know me know at least a bit about my Mom, Mary Andrews. She was, and still is, my hero. She raised my brother and I by herself, without any help (financial or otherwise) from my father. She was one of my best friends in the whole world, and I talked to her daily, often multiple times. She loved to laugh, loved her family-especially her kids and grandkids, loved her job as bookkeeper at the Minnesota School of Business, loved an ice cold tall vodka tonic, loved traveling with her sister Anne, loved sitting in her garden and loved so much more. She died over four years ago from one of the nastiest cancers around: ovarian cancer. I still miss her. Every. Single. Day.

My family and I are participating in the MOCA-Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance 9th Annual Silent No More Walk/Run for Ovarian Cancer on Saturday September 13th. Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly female cancers, hard to diagnose, hard to treat, and hard to live with. It is also underfunded for research into treatments, prevention and a someday cure. My mom survived breast cancer, and then she fought back ovarian cancer for about three years, but my family and I are walking in the hope that more money will help keep amazing women like my mom alive longer, and give them better choices to diagnose, treat and prevent this often silent killer. I’m asking anyone who is interested to donate, either directly to MOCA or by sponsoring us in the walk, by sending a check made out to MOCA to me. (Email me if you need my address) Thanks for your support, and if you still have your mom, tell her you love her today.

        Mary

I am so sorry about your mom - but it is wonderful that you are working hard to help others so that someday they will find a cure.

My father in law was diagnosed with lymphoma a year ago. He had a bone marrow transplant and is in remission for now - it was a long hard battle. They say there is a 40% chance of the cancer staying away - 60% chance of it coming back. He already had color cancer 10 yrs prior.

Cancer is such a terrible disease.

Anyway, please download my free cancer awareness actions (on my site under “try me” and also posted on my blog). They are a black and white conversion with 14 color overlays - each representing a “ribbon color to fight breast cancer. I created this free set and asked for prayers when my Father In Law was diagnosed. So far things have been going well, but we are enjoying every minute with him, knowing things are so uncertain.

Here is a link to my site for the download: http://www.mcpactions.com

Again - I am so sorry for the loss of your mom - who sounds like an incredible person.

          Thanks - Jodi

The first paragraph made me cry. So well written. I got such a glimpse of who your mother was, a strong and beautiful lady. I lost my mom over 6 years ago suddenly after plastic surgery and I miss her. every. single. day. She raised me and my brother as a single mom as well. Have a good walk on Saturday. She is looking down with such pride and admiration.

        #91…Apertura

        by admin ~ August 29th, 2008

The Apertura Photo blog is the blog of photographers Ray Soemarsono and Erwin Darmali, who work out of Southern California, but travel for wedding coverage as well. Ray and Erwin are extremely talented photographers who both have amazing artistic documentary styles, though each markedly different in their approaches. Most of the posts they blog cover weddings, but somehow they manage to never make one wedding look like another; they keep coming up with fresh inventive and imaginative shots of each couple and wedding. Their work so perfectly captures the gaiety and energy of the receptions, it makes me feel like I was there.

        Enjoy!
