Need opinions of other photographers…(& freebie for one!)

I’ve been making these necklaces/pendants and bag tags/keyrings for clients and wondered if other photographers would buy them for their clients. A bit about them: they are each handmade with two pieces of hand cut glass, photo is placed between the two pieces of glass, which I then wrap in copper foil tape, burnish smooth,  then they are soldered shut with lead free silver solder.

They are each unique and no two pieces are exactly alike, due to the handmade quality. I wanted to gauge interest in them and would appreciate if you leave a comment as to if you’d sell them (or gift) to your clients, and what price range you could see paying for them.

I’ll do a drawing for a free pendant from amongst all those who leave comments as requested within the next week. Thanks!

Mary

Raquita - May 31, 2009 - 8:29 am

for me it would depend on price point and turn around but if it wasn’t a terribly long turnaround (1-2 weeks) I would think about using them as gifts to my special clients..

Glenda - May 31, 2009 - 8:32 am

OMGosh those are so dang adorable and you made them – WOW! I know customers would love them and gosh no clue what to charge though??? Adorable, in fact I think I might need a few for myself!!

jeanine - May 31, 2009 - 8:38 am

I love ‘em and depending on price I would buy them as gifts or offer them as products. I’ve been on the search for nice affordable jewelry. I could see gifting them if they are about $25. I may be way out of the ball park though.

Shannon S - May 31, 2009 - 8:43 am

I like them. However, I have found that my client base does not always purchase the purses and the pendants, even though they like them.

Susan Dodd - May 31, 2009 - 8:47 am

Hi Mary,

These are very cool!! I think they might look neat with some beloved pet portraits inside. I especially love the keyring!

Philly - May 31, 2009 - 8:51 am

They are beautiful and definitely something I would gift to clients…Although being in Australia I’m not sure if the conversion to aus $ as well as postage would make them very accessible to me

Penny - May 31, 2009 - 8:54 am

Well, they look lovely to me! I think they have a posh look to them, and I bet they are time consuming to make, so I’d be surprised to get them for under $65 or so. I’d gift them to my clients for sure. Hope I get the freebie.
Thanks also for all your hard work on Blogs of photographers, I read every post and love it.

Dawn - May 31, 2009 - 9:02 am

Wow these are quite lovely! I can see giving them to my clients as gifts or incentives more often than selling them, but I do think there is a market for them for sure. Not sure about price range – most photo jewelry I’ve seen can go (retail) from as little as $15 and as high as well, as high as you want. How big are they?

Beautiful work!

Christina - May 31, 2009 - 9:02 am

I’m not a person that likes to wear pictures as jewelry but I think others might be. These are very stylish. If I were a person interested in buying them from a photographer, I’d pay between $60-$100.

Patrice - May 31, 2009 - 9:31 am

I love them – I have been looking for a new source to but photo jewelry. Thanks for sharing.

MelodyA. - May 31, 2009 - 9:53 am

I love the “rough” handmade look of them. I would offer them but I too don’t know how much I’d charge. I’m thining if I wanted to buy one from a photographer I wouldn’t pay more than $40.

elena wilken - May 31, 2009 - 9:59 am

I think gifting them to clients would be a great idea! (offering them like product as well) I would see myself paying a little more, since they would go to clients that would make larger orders…
how big are they? I am not very familiar with photo jewelry, but how are yours different from the other stuff that you find out there? what is different about them? that’s what might set you apart from the competition.

Dean Seiveno - May 31, 2009 - 10:15 am

Those are very unique and I like the presentation of the photos within them. Nice work. Since they are hand-made, it would depend on the price point for me.

renee hindman - May 31, 2009 - 10:23 am

Hi Mary, I LOOOOOOOVE these. I would like them for myself. I don’t want to sell them, however would be interested in giving them with large orders.

Roxanne Bappe - May 31, 2009 - 10:52 am

I would definitely offer these as incentives and gifts for my clients. Depending on size, I’d be willing to pay $20 or so. That is assuming they are small…and I’m willing to pay more for larger pendants!

Robyn - May 31, 2009 - 11:07 am

They are lovely! So precious.

I would gift them with an order, but not sell them.

I could see paying around $20.

P.S. – Your presentation of them is spot on.

Diane - May 31, 2009 - 11:26 am

I, too, think they are wonderful, but find that though my clients seem to say they like the purses and jewelry, rarely purchase it. I could see gifting these to clients who make large purchases though. I’d love to have one!

Caitlin - May 31, 2009 - 11:31 am

I do not do any product ordering (I give the images on CD), but if I did I would totally sell them. They are adorable!

fernando tobares - May 31, 2009 - 11:44 am

these are very nice, depending on the price point I would give one away at first for higher priced orders, which may prompt someone to by extras for grandparents etc… Nice work!

Roxanne Bappe - May 31, 2009 - 11:48 am

I would definitely give these to clients as incentives or gifts! Depending on their size, I can see paying $20 or so….probably more for larger pendants. I love them!!!

Trent - May 31, 2009 - 12:13 pm

As everyone else has says, these are lovely. Don’t know what the market would be up where I am, but they are something I may take a run at, just to see what the demand is….

Natacha - May 31, 2009 - 12:36 pm

I always include a similar gift for the mother. Either a bracelet or a keyring.

I found that the clients really like that something extra.

Meghan Justice - May 31, 2009 - 1:50 pm

These are very cute! I would consider giving them to a gift to special clients. I don’t think I would pay more than $25 (including shipping).

Jaclyn - May 31, 2009 - 2:34 pm

I love them for myself! haha… I think what I like the most is that they look handmade! I would be willing to offer them to my customers. I think I could definitely sell a few, depending on the price of course!

Jamie - May 31, 2009 - 4:31 pm

These are awesome! I love that each one is unique. I think these would be good with portrait/pet/etc market, but I don’t think my market would be huge with them. If I focused more on children, then I would definitely consider something like this.

sandra - May 31, 2009 - 5:03 pm

i think they are beautiful. they are unique and definitely a piece to treasure. i would certainly consider offering them to clients as they are not your ordinary up-sell.

Jenn - May 31, 2009 - 5:28 pm

I think they are super cute but I dont know if I would bother with selling them to clients only because I’m not sure if they would be a huge hit. They would be a great gift idea and I would definitely consider selling them to clients if the price was right!

Gen - May 31, 2009 - 7:51 pm

Very Interested…these are unique- yet stylish. What is the cost?

Gen

Jana Kunz - May 31, 2009 - 8:01 pm

I have tried the jewelry thing and they just do not sell with my client base. I could see gifting these if they were the right price.

Melissa Brown - May 31, 2009 - 8:09 pm

I like them and would be very interested in offering them to clients, depending on the prices. I have looked at various sites for photo jewelry, purses, etc. and the prices have been too high to really make it worth my time. I look forward to finding out what you decide to do.

Ellen - May 31, 2009 - 9:17 pm

I would love to have something like this to gift to my clients!

Jessica - May 31, 2009 - 9:25 pm

I really love the necklace. I can see offering them as part of tiered pricing…perhaps as a freebie if you spend so many hundred on prints, etc.

or i would probably sell it for $25 independent from that.

Amy Cameron - May 31, 2009 - 9:34 pm

I currently have a jeweler that is working on something similiar. I think they are great. I would purchase them if my jeweler doesn’t work out. I’d probably expect to spend from $40 to $60 for a pendant…

Thanks for all you do…Beautiful!

JordanK - May 31, 2009 - 10:03 pm

I could see spending around $60-$80 for something like that. I probably wouldn’t try to sell them to my clients because people in S.D. don’t really go for anything out of the ordinary…but I would buy one for myself. ;c)

Jennifer - May 31, 2009 - 10:18 pm

OMGosh…. They are sooo adorable… I would love one around my neck of my daughter!!!!!

Rebecca - May 31, 2009 - 10:47 pm

I would love to offer something like this to my clients, and I am thinking my clients would be willing to pay $50for the necklace and maybe $25 for the pendant. But I am not really sure.

Danielle Simone - June 1, 2009 - 12:14 am

I would definitely gift them, but not offer them for purchase. I find that my clients do not purchase jewelry or purses for themselves, but love them as gifts. Strange…but true.

Sam - June 1, 2009 - 2:15 am

I would definitely consider gifting the keychains as long as the price point was under $30. Would consider selling either at slightly higher price points. Love the authenticity & handcrafted look of these.

Jenny - June 1, 2009 - 6:51 am

I adore these! Too cute and would love to see pets in them as well. I’m not sure about how much to pay/charge, but I was thinking somewhere in the $50-100 range. Keep us posted on your future plans for these!

Christy Lynn - June 1, 2009 - 7:07 am

Oh these are gorgeous! Yes I would definitely look at purchasing these for clients and myself!

Juli - June 1, 2009 - 9:07 am

I’m already doing something similar, and my clients love them!

danielle fox - June 1, 2009 - 9:30 am

mary, love it love it. I really would love these to offer, absolutely adorable. kuddos to you..much love dani fox

Brandy Anderson - June 1, 2009 - 9:39 am

I think many photographers are slightly weary of jewelry vendors now, so that may be your only hitch. So many vendors start out great, but once they get a lot of business, they completely flounder. I wouldn’t offer jewelry for sale to my clients because of this, but I might gift them. I would expect a pendant like this to cost around $60.

Chrissi - June 1, 2009 - 9:41 am

they’re very cute ~ I think I’d gift them as well.

heather - June 1, 2009 - 10:50 am

they are beautiful – I would love to ofer them to clients – never mind – I would love one for me! it would depend on the price point as well especially in the current economic situations that sadly so many families are in currently

Heather

Rebecca - June 1, 2009 - 12:33 pm

I love these. I would love to include them as “tags” on my packaging for clients. When you decide to begin selling them please let me know.

Andrea Hillis - June 1, 2009 - 2:06 pm

Love these, and would purchase for myself.

My clientele, I’ve had very few purchase jewelry, handbags, etc…but I would certainly gift to a good client.

Price range, I would say $35 to $50, maybe a little more depending in size.

Andrea

:)

Melissa - June 1, 2009 - 2:30 pm

Depending on the price point, I would probably gift them to my client, if the turn around time was pretty quick. I would use them as a ‘Thank You’ or ‘Haven’t seen you in Awhile’ gift.

Danielle Bryson - June 1, 2009 - 3:34 pm

Depends on the price point. I work with a lot of single income families so they usually order the basics. But if they are a good price, would definitely look at them. So much of the pendants you see out there are kinda tacky but these are beautiful. If anything, I’d get some for me. :)

Tina Ryan - June 2, 2009 - 9:56 am

Depending on the price I would perhaps offer them as part of my baby plans and as client gifts.

While as much as the clients love to look at them I don’t find they want to spend the markup price on them for themselves.

I love the rough natural look of them.

meg - June 2, 2009 - 6:32 pm

I love how they look! and I’d like to see them closer. I would probably include them as a little “surprise” when sending out the high value packages, I think they would give good exposure and word of mouth as people ask about them when they see your previous client wearing them/ on their key chain etc…

Stacey - June 3, 2009 - 6:39 am

These are lovely! I actually do offer a wide range of portrait jewelry to my clients and these are different, so I would consider them. I have recently noticed that my clients have not been purchasing jewelry (maybe due to the economy) and a putting their money into larger portraits for their home. I would say these could retail for $60-80, depending on size and if necklaces came with, etc.

Kim - June 3, 2009 - 7:28 am

Love these – very nice! I like that each is unique. For my clients, I would use these as an add-on/gift and would expect to pay $40-$50. I am looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

karen mckinnon - June 3, 2009 - 8:56 am

I LOVE them – especially compared to the other photo charms that I know are out there. I really like the look of these – well done and keep us posted.

Sherry - June 3, 2009 - 12:55 pm

I love them! How much will you be selling them for?

Tammy - June 3, 2009 - 3:14 pm

I would buy them to resale as long as I could sell them to my clients at a reasonable rate. They’re beautiful.

Jane Photo - June 4, 2009 - 6:17 pm

I would, but generally the jewelry markup is just not high enough for me. I think these are beautiful.

Janine Guidera - June 5, 2009 - 10:01 am

These are gorgeous, and very individual. I’m not sure how they operate…if they are soldered shut, can the image be placed in them afterwards?? Or does the images have to be sent to you beforehand. In other words, is it an item we could buy in bulk and have on hand, because that would make it more appealing to me.

kristen - June 8, 2009 - 3:45 am

I’d pay between $40-$100 depending on the size.
I really usually hate photo jewelry, because they usually look really cheap but these are gorgeous. Reminds me of the jewelry from Sundance (Robert Redford’s company).
I would definitely consider buying these for my top clients as a thank you, and I’d offer these as products too, as long as the turnaround time was less than a month.

Sara Mellander - June 10, 2009 - 4:06 pm

I definitely would add these to my product list!! They are too cute! I want one for me…actually what a great way to advertise them by wearing them! Count me in!! :D

admin - June 10, 2009 - 4:19 pm

Comments after this one will not go into the drawing… sorry for the delay. Myself and two kids had strep, then end of school year busy + sessions = too busy! Will do drawing soon and post winner. Thanks everyone!
Mary

Sarah - June 16, 2009 - 3:29 pm

I think they’d be pretty popular. I often see posts for Photo Jewelry on photography forums.

hope - July 9, 2009 - 4:03 pm

I love them. I would buy them but it would depend on price. I want to learn how to do them!
